School Wide Positive Behaviour Support
What is School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)?
At Furlong Park School for Deaf Children, we proudly use School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)—an evidence-based framework that helps us create a positive, safe and supportive learning environment for every student.
PBS focuses on explicitly teaching, modelling and acknowledging expected behaviours, while also providing targeted support for students who need additional help. This ensures that all students can experience success academically, socially and emotionally within an inclusive and bilingual Auslan–English community.
Our PBS approach aligns with our school values:
I Am a Learner • I Care for Others • I Am Responsible • I Am Safe
Why PBS Matters
When PBS is implemented well, students and teachers are able to focus more on meaningful learning and positive relationships. At Furlong Park, PBS supports:
- increased respectful and positive behaviour
- more time spent on high-quality instruction
- improved social, emotional and academic wellbeing
- stronger relationships between students and staff
- a predictable and consistent learning environment
- clearer expectations that help students feel safe, confident and ready to learn
Through PBS, we are committed to building a school culture where every student has the skills, support and encouragement to thrive.
Our Behaviour Matrix
Our School‑Wide Teaching Matrix is central to our PBS framework. It clearly outlines what our four values look like in different areas of the school—such as classrooms, the yard, transitions, online spaces and shared environments.
Expectations are explicitly taught through lessons, modelled by staff and regularly reinforced throughout the day. The matrix gives students a shared understanding of what success looks like across all settings and helps create a consistent, predictable school environment.
Acknowledgement System
Recognising and celebrating positive behaviour is an important part of PBS at Furlong Park.
When staff see students demonstrating behaviours from the School‑Wide Teaching Matrix, students receive PBS stickers. These stickers are added to the student’s tens frame, helping them see their progress.
Once a tens frame is complete, the student is acknowledged at our Friday whole‑school assembly, celebrating their effort and commitment to our values.
As students continue to collect stickers, they reach milestone totals (such as 50, 100, 150 and 200) and earn a reward from the PBS Shop, also celebrated at assembly. This system helps motivate students, reinforces positive behaviour and builds pride in their achievements.
